Biomanipulation

In order to restore unbalanced lake ecosystems, Allied Biological utilizes a technique called biomanipulation. Biomanipulation seeks to restore the proper food chain of the waterbody by controlling or augmenting the population of bacteria, zooplankton or fish species. Biomanipulation is typically employed in small to medium-sized lakes and ponds. It is an alternative to nutrient management and may provide long term effects.

At Allied Biological, we employ biomanipulation by:

  • Stocking game fish for ponds and lakes of all sizes. We can counsel you on the best fish for your region, and stock them in the proper density and at the appropriate times.
  • Adding beneficial bacteria and enzymes, in order to breakdown the organic material at the bottom of the lake or pond. This bacteria feeds upon decomposing matter, and assists in clearing and cleaning the water.
  • Analyzing your lake’s zooplankton population, and then stocking Daphnia to graze the phytoplankton population and restore balance to the plankton community.
