Fisheries & Aquatic Biology
Aquatic biological assessments help to determine the condition of aquatic habitats based upon the resident biota. Only with understanding the resident plankton, algae, fish, and other aquatic life, can we assess the condition and develop a solution to the aquatic problem. Our staff is fully equipped to provide scientific analysis and monitoring as a baseline survey, on-going study, or impact assessment.
The biota provides a look into the long-term conditions and environmental health of the lake. Our biologists assess plant communities with accurate taxonomic identifications and detailed GPS mapping of the lake, pond or reservoir. With a background in rearing Daphnia and other aquatic organisms, our biologists can accurately process phytoplankton, zooplankton and macroinvertebrate samples and their levels of tolerance to limnological conditions. Their presence or absence indicated the environmental integrity of the water body. This study helps to ascertain the methods to employ throughout the project to improve the health of the aquatic habitat.
The fishery is one of the leading factors influencing lake water quality. Each year, lake fish communities are studied in order to make recommendations for a sound fishery management plan that includes habitat enhancement, catch and release implementation, and slot limits.
We employ our own electro-fishing boat, as well as trap nets, gill nets and seines to conduct a thorough study of a lake’s fish community.
